Chapter 3

Bells third birthday

I was a quiet child around most and in school I had friends but found it difficult sometimes to make the first step of friendship.  But once taken I would usually keep my friends for many years.  I now know that to have a friend you must be willing to take the bad with the good for no one is perfect.  A true friend will still care and come back to you if there is a misunderstanding.  Bridges burned are never really burned at all....for that flame will continue to glow with the power of friendship.  If it doesn't it was never friendship at all.

Unfortunately I found school boring most of the time.  The things I loved I never found there and if I had participated in the activities that appealed to me I would have found it challenging and rewarding.  I look back now and can see I should have been in music, drama, and art.  I found English and History enlightening.  I have a love for horses, yet have never owned one.  When I was little we moved a lot and back and forth between Indiana and Tucson, Arizona.  In Arizona we lived on a farm but across the long field was the school I attended.  So, I would walk to school usually across that field. At recess I was not with the other kids often for there was a place that boarded horses next to the playground and I couldn't wait to run there and pet them through the tall fence, just to gaze upon and admire their beauty. I had a teacher there that saw my love for horses and gave me special book all about horses. :) To me they are the most beautiful creatures on earth for they display the dance of the wind with their manes and freedom with their gait.  One of my favorite things is to feel the wind blowing through my hair.

Bell's love of horses begin early :)

I attended kindergarten and first grade in Arizona and then we moved back and I attended fifth grade.  I loved all the things little girls do as a child.  Fairy tales, dolls, pets, dresses, and playing.  I was part tomboy too who enjoyed playing marbles and cowboy and indians.  I would befriend any dog or cat or at least try.  When I was five there was this neighbor's dog that came in our yard. It had picked up a spur in it's foot and was in pain.  I wanted to help it so I begin to remove it.  As I did it bit me in the wrist very near the main artery.  I calmly walked in and showed my mom to tell her what happened.  She paniced and I didn't understand what all the fuss was about.  They called the sheriff and they quarantined the dog for ten days and my mom worried about the bite.  I still have a small scar on my left wrist from that adventure.

My brother and I who was three years older were very close.  He would watch out for me and I would tease him a lot. When I was three there was this boy that would throw rocks at him all the time.  One day when it happened I picked up a rock and threw it back hitting the boy in the face.  His dad came over mad as a wet hen. My mom said " Your son throws and hits my boy all the time and he has never threw back. My daughter took up for her brother."  The man left and no more rocks were ever thrown on either side.

The funny thing about time is you don't feel it as it passes but you can see it when you look back.
